# Understanding the Importance of Self-Esteem

Chapter 1: The Role of Self-Esteem

In my professional experience, I frequently observe challenges related to both high and, more commonly, low self-esteem among clients. Individuals often pose questions like, “What’s wrong with me that people treat me so poorly? They insult, belittle, and manipulate me. Perhaps my self-esteem is low because of this...”

While this could be a valid concern, it is essential to delve deeper into the concept of self-esteem. Self-esteem can be understood as the balance between your authentic self and the person you aspire to be. It encompasses your current self-image and the idealized version you envision.

Individuals struggling with low self-esteem typically exhibit uncertainty about their capabilities, fear of making mistakes, and a tendency to attribute blame either to themselves or others. They often find it challenging to refuse requests for help, even when it conflicts with their own plans, leading to unrealistic commitments. Driven by the fear of misunderstanding or criticism, they strive to appease everyone, thus showcasing their insecurities.

Conversely, those with inflated self-esteem may view themselves as superior to others, deeming them unworthy. They believe they are right regardless of the evidence presented to the contrary and often dismiss alternate viewpoints. When faced with failure, they are quick to blame external circumstances rather than reflecting on their actions. This competitive nature extends to their relationships with family, friends, and colleagues, where they exhibit a tendency to dominate conversations and disregard others’ opinions. Teaching others becomes a favored activity, from mundane tasks like washing dishes to more significant matters such as parenting. Such individuals rarely acknowledge their errors, let alone offer apologies.

Conclusion

In summary, low self-esteem represents a diminished perception of one’s abilities, while inflated self-esteem signifies an exaggerated view of oneself. Adequate self-esteem, however, reflects a realistic evaluation of personal strengths and weaknesses in various life situations. It plays a crucial role in enhancing one’s ability to assess situations accurately, thereby increasing the likelihood of achieving favorable outcomes.

As Chuck Norris once remarked, when asked what he would do if confronted by robbers demanding his wallet, “I would hand over my wallet, as money can be earned again. However, life is singular, and there are no second chances.”
