Navigating Life's Lessons in Your 20s: What to Expect
Written on
Chapter 1: The Illusion of Glamour
Growing up, I held a skewed view of life in my 20s. I envisioned it as a dazzling adventure filled with independence, excitement, love, and personal growth. However, the reality is that while it can be all of those things, it often lacks the sparkle we anticipate.
Our 20s can be enjoyable, largely due to the underappreciated lessons we pick up along the way. While we love to celebrate our accomplishments, we rarely discuss the insights gained through the challenges we face.
Let’s delve into three significant lessons you'll encounter in your 20s:
1. Embracing Change
Change is a gradual process, so don’t be alarmed if one day you wake up and hardly recognize yourself. Perhaps you find late nights less appealing, or your outlook on life has shifted dramatically. This transformation might seem sudden, but it's the result of countless small changes over time.
During high school, I believed I was destined to be a driven career woman, eager to climb the corporate ladder. I clung to that identity for years, trying to shape my actions accordingly. However, I eventually discovered that my aspirations have shifted dramatically. Acknowledging this evolution has not been easy.
The key takeaway is that growth is a constant in our lives. Embrace the fact that it's perfectly normal to change.
2. The Value of True Friendship
I used to mock my mother for having only a few close friends. Despite being an outgoing person who connected with many, her true friendships were few and far between.
Now that I’ve matured, I completely understand her perspective. After college, as people pursue their paths, friendships often dwindle. The relationships that endure are those cultivated through intentional effort. Maturing means recognizing that many friendships formed out of circumstance can be superficial.
The real measure of friendship is how it holds up when you no longer see each other regularly. Cherish those loyal friends who genuinely deserve your time and energy.
3. Redefining Success
Coming to terms with this concept has been challenging for me. Growing up in a competitive academic environment, I internalized the belief that success equated to being the ultimate ‘girl boss’ and excelling in my studies.
However, the reality is that success is a personal concept. Not everyone aspires to spend their lives in an office or prioritize material wealth over health and happiness. My perspective has evolved, and I realize that we are all unique individuals with varying desires and needs. Once our fundamental needs are met, the definition of success shifts.
What kind of life do you envision for yourself? How do you define success?
Each person’s path through their 20s is distinct, and we will achieve key milestones at our own pace based on our individual definitions of success. So, take heart — there’s ample time to navigate your journey.
Enjoy the ride!
