Maximizing Audiobook Sales: My Surprising Launch Success

Chapter 1: The Unexpected Success of My Audiobook Launch
In a previous post, I discussed how I utilized ACX to create an audiobook as a form of passive income. For those who followed my journey, you’ll know that I was on the lookout for a narrator since I’m not fond of my own voice. I’m thrilled to share that my audiobook debuted on Audible two weeks ago, and surprisingly, I’ve sold almost 20 copies already.
Did I anticipate this level of sales? Absolutely not.
Am I excited about it? Definitely!
Especially considering I haven’t run any advertisements, directed traffic to it, or even mentioned it to my family yet. So, how did I achieve these sales?
The Rising Popularity of Audiobooks
I genuinely believe that many people are not inclined to read as much as they could. For various reasons, reading often doesn’t make it onto most people's to-do lists. This trend aligns with the statistics from 2020, where more than 71,000 audiobooks were released in the U.S., marking a 39% increase from the previous year, according to Publishing Perspectives.
This surge mirrors the growth of podcasts; listening to an audiobook during a commute is far easier than trying to read a physical book while driving.
How to Boost Your Audiobook Sales
To create an audiobook, you’ll first need a book, and having it already available on Amazon makes the process smoother on ACX. I attribute a portion of my swift sales to discovering an excellent narrator whose voice captures the essence of my book perfectly.
When I opened my book for auditions, it had recently made a few sales, which helped its Best Seller Rating drop below 100,000. Narrators tend to gravitate towards better-selling books, as it implies a higher likelihood of the audiobook selling well, which in turn means more income for them.
Thanks to my wonderful narrator, potential buyers are drawn in by the audio sample. Additionally, a compelling cover design is crucial. Whether for a physical book or an audiobook, an eye-catching cover can significantly enhance sales.
Audiobooks Have Been Profitable So Far
The initial weeks following my audiobook's release have been rewarding. I didn’t have high expectations, yet I’ve earned a decent amount from this venture. My narrator has also benefited financially from his contributions, making audiobook narration a fantastic side hustle for anyone interested in earning royalties through their voice.
I’ll keep you posted on how this journey continues, and I might consider running some advertisements soon.
