What Do You Truly Need? Tuning Into Your Body’s Signals

Written on

Chapter 1: Understanding Your Body's Alerts

In a recent morning meditation session, we focused on how physical discomforts, fatigue, or minor injuries can serve as our body’s way of signaling that something is off-balance and requires our attention.

Imagine your car showing warning lights; you would certainly take action. Whether it’s scheduling an oil change, arranging for a service, or dealing with a flat tire, you wouldn't hesitate. Yet, when it comes to our own bodies, we often dismiss these signals. We tell ourselves, "It’s just a little discomfort," or "I can manage without sleep for now."

Like many, I often delay addressing these issues, waiting for a more convenient time to take care of myself. It’s only when things escalate to a critical level that we finally pay heed, and even then, sometimes we still ignore the warning signs.

It's no surprise that many of us feel drained and unwell. This morning, during meditation, I pondered the question, “What do you really need?” Instead of listing off my usual wants—like assistance, more hours in the day, fewer responsibilities, or someone else to prepare dinner—I decided to connect with my body and explore what it truly required.

I had an inkling of what my body was signaling, yet I was surprised by its specificity once I made the effort to listen. Perhaps I had been ignoring these subtle cues because I was too preoccupied with my to-do list. Today, however, I tuned in; my body’s voice was gentle and clear. Here’s what I discovered I needed:

  • A Hug: I craved human connection and affection, reminiscent of the comfort I felt as a child curled up on my grandparents' laps. As a mother and wife, the responsibility of care often falls to me, and I find myself unsure how to ask for this kind of nurturing without feeling awkward.
  • Ocean Water: The calming sound, scent, and energy of the ocean have always brought me solace. Yet, despite living just a short drive from the beach and having a parks pass, I rarely take the time to visit. Why is that?
  • A Massage: My body has been through a lot lately due to various injuries. I don’t want a deep tissue massage; instead, I long for a soothing experience with gentle oils, dim lighting, and soft music—what my husband affectionately calls "porpoise music."
  • Sunshine: Surprisingly, despite my fair skin and a long history of avoiding the sun, I found myself longing for its warmth. It’s been hiding behind clouds for far too long.
  • Quiet and Rest: I’ve previously discussed the importance of self-care, particularly rest. I left my Ph.D. program and resigned from a demanding job to focus on my well-being. Yet here I am, still rushing around. The fact that I can barely walk at the moment is a clear sign of my delusion.

Currently, I’m participating in two writing challenges and trying to revive my business while contemplating the establishment of a coaching practice. When will I learn to listen and act on what my body is communicating?

Interestingly, what my body expressed had nothing to do with the frantic pace I often associate with work. I’ve come to realize that my anxiety around productivity stems from self-esteem issues; I feel the need to achieve more, even when I’m already doing well.

This morning, writing felt burdensome despite my love for it. I suspect that if I take care of the five needs mentioned above—even just once—the warning lights may diminish. Ideally, they might even turn off completely if I consistently prioritize these actions.

The purpose of sharing my experience is to encourage you to engage in this self-reflection as well. Find a quiet moment to connect with your body, placing your hand on your heart, chest, or belly. Breathe slowly and focus on that sensation for a minute. Then ask yourself, “What do I need?” Listen intently.

If your mental list surfaces, acknowledge it for its attempt to assist, and then ask again: “What does my body truly require?” You might be surprised by the answers that arise. Once you discover what you need, take action. That’s my plan for the upcoming weeks.

Wishing you well on your journey.
