Understanding Climate Change: Why We Often Look Away

Written on

Chapter 1: The Challenge of Acknowledging Climate Change

In times of uncertainty, finding the time or motivation to engage with substantial issues can be challenging. Climate change is enormous and perplexing, making it easy to disregard.

When faced with a daunting problem, our initial reaction is often to ignore it. We may wish it away, expecting that someone else will handle it or that the situation will resolve itself without our involvement.

For instance, a friend of mine planned to travel to Amsterdam by train. However, after considering the travel time and costs, she opted for a flight instead. The airfare was remarkably low, and the journey took just an hour.

This scenario highlights the significant role that both cost and convenience play in our decision-making processes. The time required for travel can be a considerable deterrent, especially when compared to flying.

Yet, climate change is not something we can afford to overlook. It will not simply wait for us to address it.

Section 1.1: The Impact of Historical Travel

Two centuries ago, international travel was a lengthy endeavor. A trip to the Netherlands could stretch over several days or even weeks, depending on the mode of transport. Delays could arise from various factors, such as a sick horse or adverse weather conditions.

Today, weather still plays a crucial role. Climate change is disrupting our atmospheric conditions. Warming seas lead to an uptick in hurricanes, increased rainfall, and detrimental effects on ecosystems.

The reality is that if we want to combat pollution globally, we may need to reconsider our travel habits. Airplanes are major contributors to pollution, releasing harmful gases into the upper atmosphere, where they can exacerbate global warming.

If we are serious about reducing carbon emissions and fostering a sustainable future, we must alter our transportation methods. Our travel may need to become slower and potentially more costly.

Subsection 1.1.1: The Promise of Efficient Travel

High-speed trains as a sustainable alternative to flying.

However, there is hope. Train travel is becoming more efficient. By developing high-speed rail networks across Europe and North America, we could significantly reduce our carbon footprint. Implementing higher taxes on flights and using the revenue to subsidize train fares would be a positive step for the planet.

Section 1.2: The Dangers of Denial

Many businesses and individuals dismiss climate change as a fabricated issue. As a geographer, I can assure you that it is a pressing reality. Those who deny it often use diversionary tactics to protect their business interests.

This ignorance stems in part from an unwillingness to confront the truth. Politicians and economists know that addressing the climate crisis will demand both financial resources and personal sacrifices.

This is simply a fact; we must be ready for a challenging transition.

Chapter 2: The Consequences of Inaction

In this video, "Why We Ignore Climate Change, and What We Can Do About It," we explore the reasons behind our collective inaction and what steps we can take to mitigate this pressing issue.

In another insightful video, "Why Our Brains are Wired to Ignore Climate Change," George Marshall discusses the psychological barriers that prevent us from addressing climate change.

The consequences of ignoring climate change are dire: accelerated extinction rates, desertification, vast areas submerged underwater, disrupted ecosystems, widespread diseases, and food shortages.

Surely, a bit of inconvenience and discomfort is a small price to pay compared to these catastrophic outcomes.

What do you think? Is ignorance truly blissful, or should we confront the reality of climate change head-on?
