Chapter 1: Introduction to the 30-Day Mental Challenge
The essence of this challenge is simple: all it requires is your willingness to try. I firmly believe in the effectiveness of straightforward techniques. The crucial element is your passion and desire for change. What may seem uncomplicated at first glance can often reveal deeper complexities. True depth is uncovered when you put ethical or spiritual principles into practice; only then do the inherent challenges emerge, prompting self-reflection and exploration. This journey may also lead to remarkable breakthroughs in your personal development.
As many have requested the insights from my November 2015 article in Science of Mind magazine, I am pleased to share it here, accompanied by an artwork from Josh P. Romero.
Section 1.1: A Philosophical Perspective
American philosopher William James (1842–1910) sought a practical form of spirituality that would foster tangible enhancements in happiness. The Harvard physician found hope in his later years through personal experimentation with New Thought, which he described as "the religion of healthy-mindedness." I invite today's seekers to embark on a thirty-day experiment that tests the principles of positive thinking.
This challenge draws inspiration from a passage in the 1931 book Body, Mind, and Spirit by Elwood Worcester and Samuel McComb. In it, a scientist recounted his transformative experience after committing to a month-long mental experiment. Here’s a brief summary of his insights:
Up until the age of fifty, I experienced unhappiness, ineffectiveness, and a lack of recognition. After engaging with New Thought literature and William James's advice on focusing on the positive, I decided to test these concepts for a month, despite my initial skepticism.
During this period, I restricted my thoughts. I focused solely on positive memories from the past, acknowledged the beneficial aspects of the present, and visualized every worthy ambition in the future as attainable.
Surprisingly, I soon felt a sense of happiness and contentment. The external changes were even more remarkable. I had long desired the acknowledgment of several notable individuals; unexpectedly, one reached out to invite me to assist him. My books began to get published, and my colleagues became more supportive.
This experience led me to discover a fulfilling path in life, activating forces that had previously worked against me.
Section 1.2: Your Challenge Begins
Let’s embark on this experiment together:
- Select your start date.
- Handwrite the full passage from above (never underestimate the power of this exercise).
- Add the following statement: “I commit on this day of ___________ to concentrate on all that is nourishing, uplifting, and promising for the next thirty days (signed) ___________________________”
That's all there is to it. Observe what unfolds.
