The Surprising Intelligence of Our Feline Friends

Chapter 1: A Shocking Encounter
Recently, I experienced something I never anticipated. Perhaps it’s a bit of an exaggeration, and I may be somewhat naïve, but the event itself was quite remarkable. I’m still trying to comprehend how it even happened.
Yesterday, my cat Harper managed to call my sister-in-law using my cell phone. Yes, you read that correctly.
To give you a clearer picture, Harper is a curious little tabby cat. She and her littermate, Hermione, are the best of friends. Harper spends her days on high alert, keeping a close eye on the local birds and squirrels, always intrigued by their antics. If she could speak, I’m certain she’d share all the neighborhood gossip.
She enjoys playing tag with her sisters and is notorious for her morning bursts of energy, known as the Zoomies. Most evenings, she can be found napping in my lap—at least, that’s what I assume she’s doing.
Lately, I’ve observed her getting unusually close to the television, seemingly captivated by the news. Unlike my other cats, she shows a distinct interest in current affairs. Recently, she’s become fascinated with my cell phone.
This is how the call was made.
She often taps at the screen, scrolling through my Instagram reels, appearing mesmerized by the adorable animal content I regularly follow. A significant portion of these accounts features cats. Perhaps she’s curious about what her fellow felines are up to—or maybe she’s trying to leave comments!
On the day of the incident, I had just uploaded a new reel and was checking the comments when I placed my phone down to address some emails. Harper, perched beside me on the couch, began her usual scrolling. I didn’t think much of it.
Then, I heard a voice say, “Hello, is everything okay?”
Initially, I assumed it was a reel. But then I recognized the voice. I had not initiated a call, and I hadn’t heard my phone ring. To my surprise, I discovered my sister-in-law was on the line.
Somehow, Harper had navigated away from Instagram, tapped the phone icon, and called her! As soon as my sister-in-law answered, Harper darted away. If she ever decides to engage in conversation, we might be in serious trouble.
During our chat, my sister-in-law recounted a story about a friend whose cat inadvertently ordered a movie via Apple Pay. The friend had stepped away for a shower and later received a notification regarding the purchase, which coincided precisely with her shower time. She suspects her cat had been playing with the remote. Fortunately, the movie was one she wanted to watch, but now that remote is securely stored away to prevent any further feline shopping sprees.
My own cat, Bailey, once changed the language settings on my laptop from English to Spanish after prancing across the keyboard. It took me a while to figure out how to revert the settings.
Then there's my blind cat, Scout, who seems utterly fascinated with my laptop screen. She’s perpetually pawing at it, which often logs me out of my accounts. I can only imagine the mischief she might cause in the future!
If anyone ever feared that animals might rise to dominate the world, I would keep a close watch on the cats. They possess a certain stealthy intelligence.
So, tread carefully…
Meow.
