Quality Learning: Embrace Depth Over Breadth for Growth

Chapter 1: The Essence of Quality Learning
Delve into the subjects that truly captivate your interest. Take your time to understand them thoroughly; there’s no need to rush through your learning journey.
"What’s the point of having countless books and libraries, whose titles could hardly be read through in a lifetime? The learner is not taught but burdened by the sheer volume, and it’s better to plant the seeds of a few authors than to be scattered about by many." — Seneca.
Among the few authors I frequently revisit, I've studied every piece of work they’ve produced. These include Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, Epictetus, Chuang Tzu, Lao Tzu, Alan Watts, Steven Pressfield, and Tony Robbins, who was pivotal in my personal development journey.
While I continue to explore a variety of authors, the ones mentioned above remain constants in my life. They serve as my mentors, friends, and guiding figures, often resembling father figures to me. In my journaling practice on Notion, I maintain a "board of directors" of these thinkers. When facing challenges, I turn to them for guidance. Through extensive study, I’ve learned to anticipate their insights.
I've also established a knowledge management system that helps me organize and retrieve quotes from my mentors based on keywords. For instance, typing "Angry" yields quotes from Seneca on anger or Marcus on moderation.
Having never had a traditional teacher or mentor, I’ve chosen my guides—both past and present—with great care. We all require a compass, and they fulfill that role. I’m incredibly thankful that they have shared their wisdom through their writings.
Yesterday, we discussed the importance of moderation in learning. Today, I want to emphasize: dive deeper. Let curiosity be your ally rather than a distraction.
Your time, like life itself, is limited. Focus on quality over quantity. Reflect daily on how to explore the depths of what you believe you already understand.
