What Features Are Still Lacking in the MacBook Pro?
Written on
Chapter 1: Introduction
The MacBook Pro has garnered admiration from Apple enthusiasts and creative professionals due to its impressive chip performance, mini-LED display, and versatile ports. However, there are still several functionalities that users find lacking. Below are five features that many are still hoping to see.
Support for UHS-III SD Cards
Apple has reintroduced an SD card slot in the MacBook Pro, a feature missing since 2015, which should please photographers and video producers. However, it’s worth noting that the reader does not accommodate UHS-III cards, which can achieve read and write speeds of up to 624 MB/s. The disappointment continues as the slot only supports UHS-II cards, limiting data transfer speeds to 250 MB/s instead of the theoretical 312 MB/s. It seems that Apple is leaning towards older technology rather than the innovative solutions it is known for.
Support for 120Hz 4K Displays
The recent return of the HDMI port to the MacBook Pro has been welcomed, yet it falls short of expectations. The port is HDMI 2.0 rather than the more advanced HDMI 2.1, which would support 4K displays at a 120Hz refresh rate. Currently, the HDMI 2.0 port allows only up to 60 Hz for 4K displays. Apple claims that the MacBook Pro can handle two external displays at 6K resolution at 60 Hz, while the M1 Max variant can manage three 6K displays plus one 4K display.

Wi-Fi 6E Support
Wi-Fi 6E introduces enhanced features of Wi-Fi 6, including improved performance, reduced latency, and faster data transmission, extended to the 6 GHz band. This provides additional bandwidth and minimizes interference for compatible devices. It is anticipated that the first AR/VR headsets supporting Wi-Fi 6E will be released later this year, leading to speculation about its inclusion in future MacBook Pro models. Historically, Apple was quick to adopt new Wi-Fi standards, but that trend seems to have changed, possibly due to the discontinuation of its custom Wi-Fi router and Time Capsule.
Ethernet Port
The absence of an Ethernet port in the MacBook Pro can be attributed to the thickness of standard Ethernet connectors compared to the laptop's design. However, Apple managed to incorporate an Ethernet port in its latest 24-inch iMac despite similar design constraints, by integrating it into the power adapter. A similar approach could be taken with the MacBook Pro, or Apple may innovate their own solution as competitors have done.
5G Support
Unlike several competitors such as Lenovo, Samsung, and Dell, no Mac currently supports 5G technology. Will this change in the near future? A report from Bloomberg in January 2021 by Mark Gurman suggested that Apple is developing its modem for iPhones, with hopes it will debut in the MacBook Pro next year.
