Flipping the Script on Physical Therapy: A Cautionary Tale

Chapter 1: The Need for Surgery
My physician emphasized that a certain procedure was vital for effective recovery, yet he neglected to mention a critical aspect.
"Brian, I believe it's time to address that knee of yours," my orthopedic specialist stated gently, using a rare display of empathy. "It’s a fairly routine surgery; I've performed countless similar operations," he boasted, reverting to his authoritative demeanor. "You'll need a few months of rehabilitation afterward, and you'll be nearly back to normal — well, almost," he added with a smirk at his own joke.
The Operation
The surgery proceeded as my doctor had outlined. It went smoothly and as anticipated. Now, I was faced with a couple of months of rehabilitation, and I was determined to be "almost" as good as new. I had been told repeatedly that the success of knee surgery hinges significantly on the effort put into rehabilitation with a physical therapist.
Physical Therapy Experience
I arrived at the clinic with optimism and a readiness to engage fully in my recovery journey. I was more than willing to heed the advice of the physiotherapist. Eager and enthusiastic, I was ready to tackle the sessions ahead.
After a brief wait, a young therapist summoned me into the examination room. With a smile, he introduced himself, "Hi, Brian, uh, Barnaby. I'm Bruce, and I’ll be assisting you with your left knee." He appeared youthful and lively. I decided not to correct his mispronunciation of my last name; I didn’t want to create any tension from the outset.
I felt somewhat exposed in my medical gown. The young therapist confidently directed me to recline on the examination table, which I appreciated. However, a red flag was raised when I noticed him discreetly picking his nose while maneuvering my leg. Yikes! He then cupped my knee with the same hand he had just used, a practice he repeated multiple times during our 45-minute session.
The climax of my discomfort came at the end of the appointment. In the crowded waiting room, he reached out his hand (which I deliberately ignored) and jovially said, "Hey, don’t leave me hanging!" I was taken aback! I had signed up for ten more sessions of this.
I would greatly appreciate any advice on how to navigate this peculiar situation.
