Finding Your Path: Overcoming Obstacles to Achieve Your Goals

Written on

Chapter 1: Understanding Your Challenges

What recurring issue do you face that seems impossible to shake off? For me, it's managing my weight. While I'm not drastically overweight, I've been carrying an extra stone and a half for much of my adult life, with just one blissful nine-month period when I felt at a "healthy weight" and on top of my game.

Others might grapple with financial struggles, relationship difficulties, career uncertainties, or self-esteem issues. We all have that one hurdle that trips us up repeatedly.

Relentless Setbacks

Why has it been so hard for me to tackle my weight problem? I had a solid grasp on every diet and exercise plan available. I could estimate calorie counts for almost any food or drink and had researched the calories burned through various exercises. I was well-versed in the physiological theories.

Mentally, I had spent months exploring my complex relationship with food and drink through numerous articles. Yet, despite all my efforts, I found myself stuck, still carrying that extra weight.

Recently, however, something shifted.

A New Beginning

Right away, I sensed that things were different. Since that moment, I have abstained from alcohol, avoided emotional eating, maintained a daily exercise routine, and ensured I stayed hydrated and well-rested. I've adhered to my intermittent fasting schedule and turned down social events that I knew would lead me back into unhealthy habits.

In essence, I've taken all the necessary steps to reach and maintain a healthy weight, and I’ve been enjoying life without feeling deprived.

In the past, if I were reading this, I might have felt a twinge of annoyance, thinking, “Don’t flaunt your success when some of us are struggling.”

But now, something truly changed, and I want to explain how.

Chapter 2: The Importance of Getting on the Right Track

Imagine the phrase "the right track." It conjures images of a railway line, doesn’t it? Have you ever boarded the wrong train? It’s an unsettling experience, knowing there’s no immediate way to correct your mistake.

Conversely, think of the relief when you catch the right train just before the doors close, ensuring you’re on your way to your destination. Being on the right track is essential for success. It means your journey is aligned with your goals; all that’s needed is the energy to propel you forward.

So, what gets you on that path? The answer is motivation.

The Catalyst for Change

Last week, I found my trigger. During a conference, where I was busy creating daily podcasts, I had a blast. While the conference lifestyle can be unhealthy—think hotel stays, breakfast buffets, and late-night meals—it was my third such event in six weeks.

This time, after a long day, a colleague and I sat down to reflect on our accomplishments. Unbeknownst to us, another coworker captured the moment and posted a picture online, praising our teamwork.

I loved the picture... until I didn't.

That moment struck me hard. I realized I appeared older and heavier than I wanted to be. That was the wake-up call I needed. Suddenly, my motivation surged. I had a compelling reason to change, one that outweighed the allure of another drink.

I knew I could skip social outings for now. My friends would understand, and I could always catch up later. I’ve tasted beer and pizza enough times not to need another reminder.

What I need now is transformation and commitment.

The Path Ahead

So, I’m committed to making this change. Sure, I may stumble again—I've lost count of the times I've resolved to start anew. Yet, this time feels different.

I'm not ashamed that my motivation stems from wanting to feel better about myself. It's not about vanity; it's about recognizing my potential for happiness and improvement.

It's vital to remember that health and happiness can exist at any size. Others don’t get to dictate how you feel about yourself; you are the only one who can do that.

You do you. I’ll do me. Let’s embrace our individual journeys.

The version of myself I’m working on now is driven and motivated. That trigger and motivation are what propel you onto the right path.
