The Financial Perks of Embracing a 'Straight Edge' Lifestyle
Written on
Chapter 1: Introduction to Straight Edge
In 1981, the iconic punk rock band Minor Threat from Washington, DC released a song titled "Out of Step." This brief yet impactful track, lasting just 76 seconds, included these memorable lines:
I don’t smoke
Don’t drink
Don’t f**k
At least I can f**king think
Although the song's 19-year-old creator, Ian MacKaye, emphasized that his lyrics were deeply personal and not intended as a manifesto, "Out of Step" ignited a heated debate within the punk and hardcore music communities. Many listeners, primarily young people, found themselves divided over what came to be known as the "Straight Edge" philosophy.
As time progressed, Straight Edge evolved into a broader movement that combined the avoidance of cigarettes, alcohol, recreational drugs, and casual sex with veganism. Punk and hardcore musicians continued to address these themes in their songs, and today, many still embrace the Straight Edge lifestyle.
Having been a punk rock enthusiast for over 40 years and viewing Minor Threat as a seminal force in hardcore music, I never fully adopted the Straight Edge lifestyle in my youth. However, as I have aged and prioritized health and wellness, I have naturally gravitated towards Straight Edge principles. In doing so, I've discovered substantial financial advantages linked to these choices.
In today's financially strained and inflationary environment, many people are searching for ways to cut expenses. Consequently, I decided to explore the potential savings associated with adopting a Straight Edge lifestyle. Here are my insights:
Section 1.1: The Financial Impact of Quitting Smoking
Despite decades of warnings from the Surgeon General, the CDC reported over 28 million adult smokers in the U.S. as of 2021. Reflecting on my parents, who were both heavy smokers, I opted to focus on light smokers, who consume about five cigarettes daily.
Calculating the costs, a light smoker typically goes through a pack every four days. With packs averaging around $9.99, this adds up to approximately $975 annually for a light smoker.
Moreover, the Straight Edge philosophy also avoids recreational drug use. While I won't delve into the costs of illegal drugs, it's crucial to note that such habits aren't free. The cognitive impairments and addiction risks associated with drugs further highlight the advantages of living a Straight Edge lifestyle.
Section 1.2: Financial Gains from Abstaining from Alcohol
With countless alcoholic beverages available at various price points, I chose to keep my analysis straightforward. Recently, I examined the costs of six-packs of beer at a local Target. The average American beer drinker consumes around 28.2 gallons annually, which translates to about 272 bottles or roughly 45 six-packs.
At around $11.31 for a six-pack, this results in a minimum yearly expense of $509 for an average beer drinker in California. Studies show that abstaining from alcohol can lead to improved sleep, weight loss, lower blood pressure, enhanced mood, and better immunity—further supporting the benefits of the Straight Edge lifestyle.
Section 1.3: Avoiding the Costs of Casual Sex
In the pre-AIDS era of the early 1980s, the "don't f**k" aspect of Straight Edge was particularly contentious. This principle was rooted in the desire to avoid objectifying others for fleeting pleasure.
The advent of AIDS and HIV transformed the conversation around sexual health. Despite increased awareness and the availability of protection, over 1.2 million individuals in the U.S. are living with HIV, with approximately 35,000 new infections occurring each year. The cost of treatment and medication can exceed $720 annually, a significant expense that strict adherents of the Straight Edge lifestyle can avoid.
Chapter 2: Summary of Financial Benefits
To summarize, the original tenets of the Straight Edge movement included avoiding drugs, smoking, alcohol, and casual sex. While I may have indulged in some of these "vices" in my past, I now essentially live a Straight Edge lifestyle, saving at least $2,200 each year while enjoying good health for my age.
What do I plan to do with these savings? As spring approaches, I'm eyeing a stunning ocean-view junior suite in Miami Beach, ready to enjoy the season.
