Chapter 1: A Late-Night Adventure

On a red-eye flight from Toronto to San Francisco, I found myself navigating the less-than-luxurious amenities of Air Canada. Unlike the lavish long-haul Asian airlines I’m familiar with, this flight offered a rather modest experience. However, the lack of space on those fancier flights meant I had the entire row to awkwardly stretch my six-foot frame into a somewhat uncomfortable fetal position.

This was a mix of working-class practicality with a hint of Canadian charm. As per my usual boarding ritual, I stood for what felt like an eternity in front of an overpriced gift shop, contemplating the purchase of a $30 neck pillow, only to decide against it. My neck would bear the consequences.

The in-flight entertainment, consisting of subpar movies and a barely functional earbud crackling against the engine noise, failed to captivate my interest. Thankfully, I had my Kindle with me. Although "Sapiens" is not the easiest read, it was engaging—at least until fatigue set in and the letters began to blur.

Layover in Polyester Paradise

As I lay down on my polyester makeshift bed, sleep enveloped me. I woke up somewhere over the heartland, peering out into the awe-inspiring night sky. The rhythmic hum of the engines kept me in that blissful limbo between dreams and reality, a state my parents might describe as my journey into adulthood.

With my face pressed against the cold double-paned window, I was acutely aware of the thin barrier separating me from the vast emptiness of the atmosphere outside. It’s amazing how remembering the alternatives can make cramped seating feel much more tolerable than it really is.

The distant thunderstorm illuminated the night with flashes of light, a serene sight from my airborne metal vessel. I drifted off to sleep again, finding comfort in the passing time.

First Contact?

Upon waking yet again, I rubbed my eyes and looked out the window, fully alert this time. What I saw made my heart race: glowing objects in the night sky.

“No way,” I thought, a smile creeping across my face. All the recent discussions about aliens, UFOs, and congressional hearings flooded my mind. Here I was, a weary traveler gazing out at what seemed like unidentified flying objects. I could almost hear the conspiracy theorists yelling, “I told you so!” in their characteristic online voices.

Driven by an urgency unique to my generation, I fished my phone from my pocket and began snapping photos.

Glowing objects in the night sky

As I reviewed my newfound treasures, a realization struck me. “Damn it.”

It wasn’t aliens after all; it was Elon Musk’s Starlink satellites, orbiting the Earth to provide Internet access—thus ruining my dreams of making first contact. Although I had read about them multiple times, seeing them up close was a different experience. They surrounded my airplane like mechanical locusts, tarnishing the unblemished sky.

A single tear rolled down my cheek—not the kind born from deep sorrow, but rather one of sheer disappointment. I wouldn’t be the key witness in the most remarkable Congressional hearing ever. This moment was a reminder of our last untouched frontier, now marred by one man's ambitions and his shiny space gadgets.

The magic of the moment vanished. I reclined in my polyester nest, enveloped by the sound of turbofan engines and the quiet sighs of a world—and a night sky—forever altered. At least I got to see two UFOs from the plane, even if they weren’t what I initially hoped for.

Disappointment in the night sky
