Achieving the Extraordinary: A Journey of Growth and Learning

Chapter 1: A Turning Point in My Journey
In the past, I took significant steps toward one of my ambitions: studying abroad. I was thrilled to gain admission to my dream university to pursue a degree in mechatronics engineering, a field I had passionately chosen. However, I soon realized that not every student has the opportunity to study their preferred specialty due to limited spots in departments. At that moment, I was unaware that I wasn't aiming high enough.
Reflecting at 36, I've realized that being an employee wasn’t my ultimate goal. If I could turn back time, I would prioritize networking with professors, engaging with CEOs, and diving into subjects like business, finance, investing, and sales. I would dedicate my free time to honing soft skills such as public speaking, storytelling, and even acting or improvisation.
Why is this important? These competencies are vital for navigating life successfully. Effective communication and the art of persuasion are essential.
You might excel in a particular field, but if you cannot convey your abilities clearly, no one will recognize your talent. Mastering the art of persuasion is crucial in every facet of life. Many individuals shy away from selling, but in truth, all interactions involve some form of selling — whether it's your skills, your persona, or your ideas. Whether you're seeking a job, a relationship, or support for your vision, knowing how to sell is indispensable.
Regrettably, these skills are seldom taught in educational institutions. We tend to focus on specific subjects to fit into the workforce instead of preparing to lead our own enterprises. Moreover, there's no need to wait until college to acquire these abilities; the earlier, the better. Even children as young as three can start developing communication skills in nurturing environments.
Another significant aspect is your surroundings. Be conscious of where you are and who you associate with. As I mentioned previously, you are likely to reflect the traits of the top five individuals you spend the most time with.
While you may not have control over your initial environment, you can choose your companions. Interestingly, the best negotiators are often infants — they get what they want through persistence and creativity, unlike adults who tend to worry about others’ perceptions and lose sight of their objectives.
Next, actively seek mentors who are slightly ahead of you in their journey, yet still relatable. This will help make your goals feel achievable and keep you inspired to move forward.
Finding a mentor is essential. If you’re reading this, consider me your mentor. With the internet at your disposal, there are numerous mentors available online, but it’s crucial to select wisely. Platforms like YouTube host a myriad of coaches, but the choice is yours. Reflect on individuals you admire in your life and invite them to guide you. LinkedIn is an excellent resource for networking and finding mentors, especially in North America, where professionals frequently share their experiences.
Students have the chance to connect with industry experts for guidance and inspiration. However, be cautious about advice from classmates and seniors who may lack practical experience.
During my undergraduate studies, I often heard older students claim, "Don’t stress too much about grades; they aren’t everything." This notion is misleading. High grades typically lead to better job opportunities and salaries. While extracurricular activities are beneficial, they should ideally help you earn income or network with successful individuals. Remember, success requires both the right connections and financial resources.
In my third year, I was presented with an incredible opportunity. The Japanese government sponsored a program for students at my university, allowing us to learn about Japanese corporate management, intern with companies, acquire the language, and gain firsthand experience in Japan.
This was a dream come true for me. I had always aspired to travel abroad, and this program was the perfect chance. I worked diligently in my classes and was fortunate enough to be selected. My first flight to Japan was an unforgettable milestone and a significant accomplishment toward achieving one of my goals.
Always keep in mind that the right moment will arrive, but you must be prepared to seize it.
