Winding Down for a Fresh Start: Embracing New Beginnings in Business

Chapter 1: A New Chapter Awaits
Did you know that individuals aged 50 have double the likelihood of starting a successful business compared to those at 30, and those at 60 have three times the chance? While experience certainly plays a role, another factor is that extended time in a role provides deeper insights into what doesn’t work, what is unjust, and what issues exist within a company.
If you've spent years in a career, you've likely developed resilience and a tough exterior, equipping you with the skills necessary to tackle daily challenges without losing your composure. These are essential traits of successful entrepreneurs, often cultivated through years of experience "on the inside."
I once worked for a company run by two young owners fresh out of college. They believed they provided excellent customer service, yet the front desk was often unattended, and their billing department frequently made significant errors. Despite their cheerful demeanor, the business ultimately suffered as employees, including myself, left due to their deteriorating reputation and increasing competition.
With years of experience, seasoned employees tend to have a more objective perspective. You've had the opportunity to observe the subtle factors that can impede business growth. After spending time in a role, initial youthful aspirations may become tempered by reality.
You might echo the sentiment, "Life belongs to the young," yet you may realize that you’ve spent much of your life helping someone else achieve their dreams while putting yours aside. This realization, while somewhat disheartening, should prompt reflection on what comes next—whether it's retirement, pursuing your dreams, or simply moving on while you still have the energy.
From my years of coaching clients, I can confidently say that those who engage in work they love tend to be the most enthusiastic and satisfied. They experience a sense of freedom and empowerment.
While the thought of becoming a business owner later in life can feel overwhelming, seasoned entrepreneurs typically navigate this new path with a different mindset than those who have never held a traditional job. After years as an employee, responsibilities like marketing, social media, finance, and legal matters can appear daunting if you've never engaged with them before.
Aging often brings a deep understanding of the present, coupled with anxiety about the future. Many older entrepreneurs feel hesitant about venturing into technology and media, which can seem foreign. I’ve never encountered a client over 50 who eagerly anticipated mastering TikTok or Facebook Live.
It's a shame that those with the richest experiences often feel intimidated by a tech-savvy younger generation. However, you don’t need to know everything—just what works for you. Everyone's journey is unique.
If you're contemplating leaving a long-standing career to pursue entrepreneurship, focus on discovering what resonates with you and what instills confidence.
