Chapter 1: The Importance of a Morning Routine
Morning routines can be polarizing; some individuals thrive on them while others shy away. The truth is, everyone has a morning routine, but it may not be the most beneficial one. For instance, repeatedly hitting the snooze button rarely leads to a productive day.
As I embarked on my self-improvement journey, I frequently encountered advice emphasizing the significance of establishing a morning routine. I experimented with various approaches, only to find that they often felt overwhelming and unsuitable for my lifestyle. They tended to be lengthy and complicated, leading me to abandon them after just a few days.
Then, I stumbled upon the morning routine by Mel Robbins, which lasts only two minutes and thirty-seven seconds. This piqued my interest, and I thought, "I can manage that!" I decided to give it a shot.
Initially, sticking to this routine was a challenge, especially since I'm not naturally a morning person. However, I resolved to give it my best effort and monitor the results over time.
After three months of adhering to Mel’s routine, I found that I genuinely enjoyed it! It has made me feel more awake and alert in the mornings, and I generally start my day on a more positive note.
Why This Routine Works Wonders
Even as a self-proclaimed lazy morning person, I found it worth trying. The routine is concise and effective, taking just two minutes and forty-three seconds to complete. Starting a new habit can seem appealing, but the thought of committing to an hour-long routine can be discouraging. However, two minutes and thirty-seven seconds? That’s entirely manageable.
This routine establishes a low barrier to entry, making it accessible for anyone willing to give it a shot. Once you've mastered the initial two minutes and thirty-seven seconds, you can easily incorporate additional activities. Personally, I’ve added a dream journal to help recall my dreams more vividly, a brief meditation session, and a morning walk.
The Routine Breakdown
Ready, Set, Go!
5 Seconds – Rise and Shine
When the alarm goes off, utilize the five-second rule to get out of bed. Simply count down from five and jump out as soon as you hit zero. This prevents the temptation to hit snooze and settle back into bed.
0 Seconds – No Phone Time
Avoid checking your phone or emails first thing in the morning. Instead, take this time for self-reflection or personal activities. Prioritize yourself!
20 Seconds – Dress for Success
Place your workout clothes next to your bed the night before. This makes it easier to get ready for your morning exercise, reinforcing your goals for the day.
10 Seconds – Self-Affirmation
Begin your day with positive affirmations. Whether it’s repeating “I’m okay. I’m safe. I’m loved” in front of a mirror or jotting down three things you’re grateful for, this step fosters a positive mindset.
2 Seconds – High-Five Yourself
Engage in a little self-encouragement by giving yourself a high-five in the mirror while exclaiming, “Good job! You’re doing great!” This may seem silly initially, but the positive effects are remarkable.
2 Minutes – Elevate Your Heart Rate
Dedicate the final two minutes of your routine to get your heart rate up. Whether it’s a brisk walk around the block or some jumping jacks in your living room, this activity will help you feel more energized for the day ahead.
You see? It’s truly that simple. Admittedly, the exercise portion might seem daunting for some, but it's incredibly rewarding. Just don your workout gear and enjoy a quick walk, do some pushups, or any activity that feels right. You don’t have to push yourself too hard; the goal is consistency.
I’ve Discovered I Am a Morning Person
Surprisingly, I can now declare that I am indeed a morning person. This routine has helped me feel more alert and awake, leading to a far better start to my days.
While initiating a new routine can be challenging, the rewards are significant. This simple routine has facilitated the establishment of a healthy pattern. Now, my morning routine has expanded to around 30 minutes, incorporating meditation, journaling, and walking.
Overall, I’m thrilled with this morning routine and recommend it to anyone seeking a more positive start to their day. Even though two minutes and thirty-seven seconds may seem minimal, its impact on my life has been profound. I encourage you to try it out and see how it can enhance your own morning experience!
Cheers,
Max
