Strategies for Boosting Energy and Motivation When Feeling Low

Starting Small
It’s fascinating how some days we can tackle our tasks with enthusiasm, while other days, we feel like Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh, pondering, “What’s the point?” Balancing various responsibilities in life can be exhausting, and we often find ourselves feeling drained and unmotivated, questioning the effectiveness of our efforts.
Despite consuming motivational content like Tony Robbins, you might still find yourself struggling to overcome inertia. You may think about reaching for another coffee to jolt yourself into action or even give yourself a little pep talk, but ultimately, these strategies often miss the mark when it comes to addressing the underlying issues of low energy and motivation.
How’s Your Engine Running?
The first step is to assess your physical well-being. Are you adopting healthy habits that set you up for success? Consider the following questions: Are you eating nutritious foods? Are you exercising regularly? Are you getting sufficient rest? Are you staying hydrated?
If your answer is “no” to any of these, your priority should be to incorporate healthier practices into your lifestyle. Just as a bicycle with a rusty chain and flat tires struggles to perform, without proper health, your effectiveness will diminish.

Thinking Small
Many people tend to overwhelm themselves by focusing on extensive goals, which can hinder action and elevate stress levels. Instead of fixating on large tasks, start by committing to small actions that don’t have to be perfect.
For instance, I recently faced a similar challenge; I wanted to write but felt uninspired. I decided to dedicate just 30 minutes to writing. This manageable timeframe made it easier for me to start, and accomplishing even a minor task provided a sense of satisfaction. Setting small goals can propel you forward in your endeavors.

Just Move
Engage in any physical activity—take a walk, do some shadow boxing, or tidy up your space. The principle is simple: an object in motion tends to stay in motion. Even if you find it challenging to initiate significant tasks, moving your body can help stimulate energy.
Moreover, the more frequently you choose to act, even when unmotivated, the easier it becomes to continue that behavior. This process helps you become comfortable with discomfort, reinforcing your ability to act despite feelings of resistance.
It’s normal to experience fatigue and a lack of motivation at times. Rather than being hard on yourself, ensure you're prioritizing your health. Identify the smallest possible action to move toward your goals and execute it. And when in doubt, just start moving.
