I can observe events unfold almost in real time, experiencing profound horror and sorrow, yet I grapple with how to extend my support through the tweets, TikToks, and videos that flood my feed.

The influence of social media, often criticized, has resurfaced prominently in this context. It's where we hear the determination in President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s voice and see footage from inside the nuclear facility moments after its capture. It has become the battleground for debates over facts and policies, with one opinion clashing against another. Remarkably, in this scenario, social media appears almost unanimously aligned in its support for Ukraine, although we recognize that this sentiment is not universal.

Despite the outpouring of discussion and resources detailing how we can assist, it often feels as though we are pressed against a glass wall, able to see the calamity yet unable to affect it. Beyond social media, technology has introduced another dimension of conflict through cyber warfare. Groups like Anonymous and other hacktivists are launching attacks on Russian technology and infrastructure. Yet, the reality is that many of us lack the skills to contribute to these efforts meaningfully. Instead, we are confronted by a relentless stream of information on social media and news, which is further deteriorating as Vladimir Putin erodes protections for free and fair journalism and disrupts communication networks.
Chapter 2: The Limitations of Digital Perspectives
As we consume information digitally, Russia's assault on Ukraine can resemble looking through a keyhole, offering glimpses of current attacks or testimonies from witnesses. In European terms, Ukraine is a sizable nation—larger than California yet smaller than Texas—making it impossible to grasp the full scale of the conflict, even with the multitude of sources available. There are regions experiencing intense crises and others that have yet to fall under Russian control.
The narrow perspective provided by digital sources amplifies the feeling of helplessness. As overwhelming as it is to read unfiltered social media updates from Ukraine, I realize that the potential blackout resulting from Putin cutting power to a significant portion of the country would be far worse. In such a scenario, we may be left in the dark for days, weeks, or even months.
I believe Putin is acutely aware of the global outrage regarding his actions and the millions on social media expressing dismay and pleading for him to recognize his humanity, despite his evident megalomania and psychopathy. Yet, he will persist in his efforts to sever the flow of information to social media, where we remain horrified, angry, and frustrated by our inability to transform our tweets, short videos, and Instagram posts into tangible support for Ukraine.
The harsh truth is that no platform can genuinely unite us in a shared experience. We can only witness the fate of a democratic nation unfold from afar, through the confines of a screen. While our fingers may scroll and tap, those gestures do not resonate on the other side. It is imperative that we seek more meaningful ways to contribute—we must do more.
