Embracing the Growth Mindset: Navigating the Writer’s Journey

Written on

Chapter 1: Understanding the Emotional Journey

In the last three years, I've set out to learn a new skill and faced numerous challenges along the way. The pursuit of financial stability has often pushed me to explore various skills, leading me to web development. Initially, I was thrilled to grasp the concepts, but as I delved deeper, I eventually gave up.

Unfortunately, I was unaware of the five emotional stages that Iman Gadzhi highlights in his teachings, which also apply to writing. Here's an overview of these stages that may resonate with your own experiences.

  1. Uninformed Optimism

Do you recall the thrill you felt when you began your writing journey? Consider platforms like Medium; writing was a breeze. You could effortlessly share your thoughts and received immediate feedback, which encouraged interaction with fellow writers. The excitement grew as you began earning your first dollar, fueling your motivation to write more and improve your stats.

However, this initial enthusiasm can wane as you dive deeper into the nuances of writing, such as crafting titles, hooks, and storytelling techniques. Subscribing to countless newsletters and YouTube channels can lead to an overwhelming realization of how much you still have to learn.

  1. Informed Pessimism

As you gain awareness of your limitations, feelings of inadequacy may surface. Writer's block can become a real struggle, and instead of feeling inspired by stories of success, you might find them discouraging. You begin to notice the downsides of platforms like Medium and feel compelled to make changes, yet you remain stuck in a cycle of complaints and self-doubt.

  1. The Valley of Despair

This is often the stage where many give up. Overwhelmed by feelings of defeat, you may doubt your ability to achieve meaningful results. The excitement you once had seems like a distant memory. This despair can lead you to seek new opportunities, only to find yourself back at the start, feeling optimistic yet again—until you inevitably quit.

In my case, I shifted from web development to writing. I realized that one of my greatest fears was not maintaining the right mindset, which often causes people to falter in this challenging phase. It's crucial to recognize that navigating through this valley is possible.

  1. Informed Optimism

Developing a positive mindset is essential to advance to this stage. This involves setting realistic goals, being open to growth, establishing a writing routine, seeking constructive feedback, celebrating small victories, connecting with fellow writers, and focusing on the journey rather than the destination.

With the right mindset, the work becomes more manageable, and you may find renewed enthusiasm for applying what you’ve learned. Expanding your activities—like starting a newsletter—can lead to increasingly rewarding results.

  1. Success

At this point, what was once uncomfortable becomes second nature. As you persist, your aspirations start to materialize. You become more confident and disciplined, setting new objectives with a clearer vision of your desires.

Final Thoughts

The five emotional stages of writing are a universal experience, applicable to any new endeavor. The pivotal phase is undoubtedly the Valley of Despair, which you must navigate to progress. As Iman Gadzhi emphasized, there's no shortcut through these stages; understanding and accepting this process is vital for success.
