Embrace the Journey: Lessons for My 20-Year-Old Self
Written on
Chapter 1: The Importance of Perspective
Keep your gaze lifted as you navigate through life. It's essential to appreciate the path you’re on, not just the end goal.
At 20, you may find yourself wishing to fast-forward to 40, yearning for a college degree, and the wisdom that comes with age and experience. You might feel impatient to reach a point where you can share your stories and insights with others. However, it’s crucial to understand that every journey requires a process that you must experience firsthand.
In your discussions with others, you often inquire, "How did you achieve what you have? What knowledge do you possess that I lack? How can I attain your perspective?" The underlying question is clear: "How can I become you?"
However, the real message is that you need to embrace your individuality. Your journey will differ from those around you, and while you may find parallels with some successful figures, your path will yield unique results that reflect your personal growth.
I recall your conversations with influential individuals like Mark Smith. You admired the paths they took, but you wished to bypass the struggles they faced. Mark ventured into youth ministry, then archaeology, only to discover his passion lay in academia, blending both fields. You desire to pinpoint your life's destination without traversing the accompanying journey.
Though I can't fully grasp your motives, I am beginning to understand. Perhaps by the time you reach 40, the clarity will come.
Chapter 2: The Weight of Expectations
The expectations from your family and friends can feel heavy. Your parents immigrated from post-war Korea, hoping for a better life in the United States. Your mother worked tirelessly as a food packager, while your father painted houses; your mother later transitioned to restaurant work, and your father continues with his trade today.
This history creates a sense of urgency for you to define your path and make impactful choices. While some individuals effortlessly embrace life’s joys, you carry the burden of needing to achieve and contribute.
You may have faced criticism for focusing on your aspirations rather than considering how to give back to your parents. The sentiment often expressed is, "Your parents sacrificed so much for you; how can you prioritize your dreams over their efforts?"
Yet, remember that your actions do not define your identity. It's imperative to discover your true self, recognize your value, and understand how God has crafted you with purpose. Once you find this clarity, your actions will naturally align with your authentic self.
This idea may seem challenging, but once you grasp it, you’ll experience life with greater freedom and joy.
Pause and take in the beauty surrounding you. If you rush past these moments, you may miss out on what God is revealing to you.
It may take time, but you will arrive at this understanding eventually.
Take care.
