# Discovering Myself: Adwait Patil's Journey Beyond IT

Written on

Chapter 1: Who Am I?

Hello everyone! My name is Adwait Sandeep Patil, and I'm a 28-year-old currently residing in Dublin, where I work as a Service Desk Consultant for an IT solutions firm. I originally hail from Mumbai and have spent the past eight years living away from home.

To give you a brief timeline, I started my journey in the United States back in 2016 for my Bachelor's degree, graduating in 2018. I returned to Mumbai for a year, during which I didn't engage in much. In 2019, I moved to Dublin to pursue my Master's in Information Systems, graduating in 2020, and I now find myself in the IT sector.

I often feel that introductions can come off as overly formal, a sentiment I wanted to shake off before diving into my story. So, let’s get personal.

Essentially, if you want to know me, I should confess that I tend to be quite lazy and an extreme procrastinator (is there a support group for that?). I often find myself lost in thought. It’s been this way since childhood; I remember my craft teacher calling me "Visralu Vinu" back in the second grade—essentially, a playful jab at my forgetfulness.

That label has stuck with me, serving as a reminder of my tendency to zone out, a habit that has shaped my life in various ways. While this characteristic has its benefits, it has also posed challenges. Yet, that’s all part of the past, and now I’m striving to focus more.

Despite my formal ties to the IT world, I often question whether this was truly my passion. I have pursued IT academically and professionally, but the truth is, I never envisioned myself in this field. Perhaps I followed the crowd, influenced by societal expectations rather than personal desire.

Unlike many in India, my parents never pressured me into a particular career. They allowed me the freedom to choose my path, which is a privilege I cherish.

So what occupies my mind when I’m lost in thought? It ranges from the workings of the universe to deep existential questions about my life’s meaning. These thoughts have been a constant companion since childhood, prompting a quest for answers.

By the age of 11, I had stopped believing in a higher power. The simple explanation of creation didn’t resonate with me, leading me toward a passion for science. I vividly recall binge-watching Cosmos, captivated by Neil deGrasse Tyson's insights into the universe.

Interestingly, while I sought cosmic understanding, I often neglected more immediate earthly responsibilities, such as focusing on my studies. I could have chosen a different path, like philosophy, but that thought never crossed my mind. My chance to study in the U.S. in 2016 was a privilege I never dreamed of, yet it transformed my life.

Though my education was in IT, I discovered I excelled in it—not because of extensive studying, but because the American educational system suited my learning style. Achievements such as making the Dean's list and receiving awards reshaped my self-image.

Now, I am grateful for who I am, as each day reminds me of the marvel of existence. I’m embracing a more focused approach to life. Over the past few years, I've explored various interests beyond IT: from working as a chef to directing a short film, performing in opera, and obtaining three IT degrees from universities across three countries.

I feel a deep connection to all that I’ve experienced, almost as if the very essence of a star burns within me. It’s a life I never imagined I could lead. The notion that my 16-year-old self would have been astounded by my current reality is a testament to how far I've come.

As I continue to explore my passions, I realize it's time to commit to the things that truly define me. This blog is a step in that direction, a space to share my thoughts on various topics—science, philosophy, humanity, and more.

I want to discuss politics, social structures, and everything in between. I often engage in deep conversations with myself, and I believe these insights are worth sharing.

So, to summarize, I’m 28, from Mumbai, residing in Dublin, working in IT—not entirely by choice—and constantly seeking answers to life's big questions. Asking questions is my passion.

While this introduction may feel a bit vague, it captures my essence for now. I'm excited to share more with you and interact through this platform.

Thank you for reading about my journey, and I look forward to our next encounter. Until then, take care and stay curious.

Chapter 2: The Impact of My Experiences

I’ve had quite a diverse range of experiences that have shaped who I am today. For instance, during my time in Dublin, I worked as a chef for a year and a half, which taught me valuable lessons about creativity and teamwork.

The first video, "The WORST Engineering Degrees...," explores the various paths one might take in engineering and their potential pitfalls. It’s a humorous yet insightful look into how educational choices can shape our careers.

Continuing on this theme of exploration, I also directed a short film and performed on stage in an opera at one of Ireland's premier theaters. These experiences were not just hobbies; they were transformative moments that enriched my life.

The second video, "2020 WITHOUT CONTEXT!," takes a humorous retrospective look at the events of that tumultuous year, providing a unique lens through which to view our recent history.

Through these diverse experiences, I have learned to value the importance of following one's passion and interests, even when they diverge from the conventional path. I invite you to join me on this journey of discovery and reflection.
