The Digital Addiction: How Screen Time Impacts Child Development

Understanding the Impact of Screen Time
Recent research has delved into how screen time affects children's cognitive abilities and brain development. The findings present a complex picture.
A Swedish research project from the previous year indicated that video gaming might slightly enhance IQ, while interactions on social media and television viewing showed no significant influence on intelligence. Conversely, CNN reported that excessive screen exposure could detrimentally affect children's cognitive growth, language acquisition, and literacy skills.
"In a recent study, brain scans of children aged 3 to 5 revealed that those who exceeded the recommended one hour of screen time daily, without parental engagement, exhibited lower levels of white matter development in the brain—crucial for language, literacy, and cognitive skill growth." (2019)
This suggests that excessive screen time could pose risks, not just in terms of being rude or socially isolating, but also in impairing mental growth and academic success.
Behavioral Concerns
A 2021 study highlighted a connection between excessive screen time and lower IQ levels in extremely premature infants, who are particularly susceptible to neurological challenges due to their early birth.
It has been established that excessive screen time is associated with "cognitive and behavioral issues in children across the board," prompting the American Academy of Pediatrics to advise parents to limit their children's screen time to a maximum of two hours per day.
Teenagers and Their Sleep
Older youth are not exempt from these repercussions. According to Harvard Health, "Many teenagers who are up late texting not only sacrifice sleep but also miss out on deep REM sleep, which is vital for processing and retaining information."
This could lead to difficulties in recalling what they need to learn for school the following day, which is detrimental, especially during exam preparations.
The Case for Moderation
In summary, while moderate screen time may offer certain advantages, excessive use can have harmful effects and can be considered impolite when it leads to neglecting those around us.
In today's world, many choose to immerse themselves in the digital landscape, often overlooking the beauty of the real world. Instead of enjoying scenic views, they may engage in pointless debates with strangers online about celebrities or politics.
Establishing limits on screen time is essential. Perhaps it's time we all consider adopting such boundaries.
