As aspiring writers, we often hear the advice to write about our personal passions. But what happens when those passions seem unique to us? While it may feel like we’re the only ones who care about certain topics, the reality is that there are likely many others who share our interests. However, when it comes to writing for a living, should we really restrict ourselves to just our own passions without considering other perspectives and opportunities?
My Writing Journey
I often describe myself as a novice writer, but I have actually been writing on Medium since May 2021. Initially, it was a side hobby while I held a full-time job. Many writers tend to accelerate their Medium careers after leaving their 9-to-5 roles, but my journey took a different route. Upon realizing that retirement was on the horizon last September, I decided to step back from Medium to focus on life after work. I spent time with family and began to delve into copywriting—a process I’m still navigating.
A few weeks ago, I stumbled upon a seasoned copywriter discussing the potential for making money on Medium. This revelation sparked a new understanding for me: I could write on Medium with the goal of earning income. With this newfound clarity, I re-engaged with writing, this time with a clear purpose to eventually become a professional writer.

One of the influential writers I follow on Medium is Zulie Rane. I’ve participated in her 5-day Medium course and have learned about her “Venn Diagram” approach to niche discovery. Although she suggests drawing out a Venn Diagram, I opted for a more streamlined mental exercise. The essence of her method involves identifying three key areas:

- Areas where you possess knowledge and expertise.
- Subjects that provide value to others.
By examining where these circles overlap, you can identify what to write about, ensuring that your work resonates with a broader audience.

This approach has significantly influenced my writing. While I hold strong convictions on various topics, I’ve come to recognize that focusing solely on these can lead to preaching to the choir. Many readers seek a break from controversies, so I’ve started exploring subjects that I enjoy, have expertise in, and that can benefit others.
For instance, my recent articles include:
- Overcoming the “success-and-failure” cycle of resolutions.
- Escaping a mundane mindset.
While these may not be masterpieces, I hope they provide some value.
Chapter 2: What My Message Isn't
When I say that "your writing isn't about you," I want to clarify what I don’t mean.
- Personal Stories Matter: I cherish narratives that weave in personal experiences. For example, one piece I came across discussed how fatherhood reshaped a man’s perspective on masculinity. Sharing personal stories is crucial, but they should connect with your audience.
- Passion is Essential: Writing without passion can lead to dull content. Your enthusiasm, even for niche topics, will resonate with readers and foster engagement. However, remember that passion alone won't guarantee readership. It needs to align with what readers find valuable.
- Avoid Chasing Trends: Don't write solely to attract attention or follow trends. If a hot topic like Bitcoin doesn't resonate with you, trying to write about it will likely result in subpar content. Authenticity is key—write about what you know and love.
