Chapter 1: An Insight Into the iPhone 14

The anticipation surrounding the iPhone 14 is palpable, yet if you were hoping for an iPhone 14 Mini, you may need to adjust your expectations.

I’m not one to predict the future with clairvoyance, but there are experts who excel in this area. One such individual is Mark Gurman, a prominent Apple analyst at Bloomberg. His insights into Apple's plans have proven to be remarkably accurate over time.

Mark has shared his predictions regarding the upcoming iPhone 14, which is anticipated for release in the fall. Historically, since the launch of the iPhone 6, Apple has adhered to a three-year cycle for its hardware designs. Following this pattern, the iPhone 12 marked the first year, the iPhone 13 the second, and the iPhone 14 will represent the third year of this cycle.

Given this established pattern, significant design changes are likely for the next model. So, what do we currently have in the iPhone lineup?

Current iPhone 13 Models

At present, the iPhone 13 series includes:

  • 5.4-inch iPhone 13 Mini
  • 6.1-inch iPhone 13
  • 6.1-inch iPhone 13 Pro
  • 6.7-inch iPhone 13 Pro Max

Unfortunately, the iPhone 13 Mini, along with its predecessor, the iPhone 12 Mini, has not seen strong sales. Its underperformance suggests that Apple may not continue with this model in the future.

Despite its compact size and excellent performance (I personally own one), the iPhone 13 Mini may feel a bit too small for those with larger hands or declining eyesight. If you've been waiting for an iPhone 14 Mini, I recommend you go ahead and purchase the iPhone 13 Mini instead.

On the other hand, the iPhone 13 Pro Max has been a hit, particularly in markets like China.

Now, let’s shift our focus to what the iPhone 14 is expected to bring.

Section 1.1: Expected Models of iPhone 14

Gurman anticipates that the new lineup will include:

  • 6.1-inch iPhone 14
  • 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max
  • 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro
  • 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max

Notably, there is no iPhone 14 Mini in this lineup. Instead, Apple is introducing the Max and Pro Max models, both at 6.7 inches, in response to consumer preference for larger devices.

The iPhone 14 is expected to retain the flat edges and rounded corners that have characterized the iPhone 12 and 13. However, there will be some changes, particularly with a redesigned notch on the Pro models, which will also feature a larger camera bump to accommodate new sensors.

Subsection 1.1.1: Innovations in Design

Gurman has reported that the new notch will have a pill-shaped cutout for Face ID and a circular cutout for the front camera. This design change may not appease those who dislike the notch, but it's the direction Apple is taking for now.

What will set the iPhone 14 Pro models apart from the standard versions? The Pro models are expected to boast a new 48-megapixel sensor in the wide-angle camera, while the non-Pro variants will stick with the 12-megapixel sensor. Additionally, the Pro models are likely to feature the A16 processor, while the other models may use the A15 or a variant of it. This decision may be influenced by the ongoing chip shortage.

Another intriguing potential feature for the iPhone 14 is satellite connectivity. While it won’t allow for standard phone calls, this feature aims to enable users to send emergency alerts or texts when out of cellular range. The Apple Watch is also projected to receive this functionality in the future.

Section 1.2: Conclusion on the iPhone 14

Ultimately, whether the iPhone 14 will be seen as an evolution or a revolution is subjective. Based on Gurman's insights, I lean towards it being more of an evolutionary step.

Summary:

  • No iPhone 14 Mini
  • Retains flat edges and rounded corners from previous models
  • Introduction of 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max
  • 48-megapixel sensor exclusive to Pro models
  • A16 processor in Pro models
  • New slimmer notch design on Pro models
  • Possible satellite connectivity feature

If you're considering an iPhone Mini, the iPhone 13 Mini remains your best option. However, if you can hold out for the iPhone 14, it promises several enhancements over the existing models. Since iPhones don’t depreciate significantly, it may be worthwhile to invest in the latest model if you can wait.

Until next time…
