Achieving $800-$1000 Monthly on Medium: My Insights and Tips
Written on
Chapter 1: My Journey on Medium
I became a part of the Medium community nearly a year ago, and it took some time to cultivate an audience and determine my target readers. Initially, I was juggling a part-time job. Once home, my focus was on content creation, driven by a desire to leave my job and immerse myself in writing full-time for a sustainable income. Fortunately, Medium helped turn this aspiration into reality, and I felt immense joy when I earned my first $700 a few months back. Since then, I've consistently made between $800 and $1000 each month. While this income might not suffice for many, it has become a reliable source for me, enabling me to support my parents, siblings, and extended family, as well as cover household expenses.
Lessons Learned on My Medium Journey
My experiences on Medium have been enlightening, filled with both triumphs and challenges. Here are some insights I've gained that could help steer you in the right direction.
Quitting a job for freelance writing can be beneficial. Embracing Medium as a serious venture is crucial if you aim to make a living from home. Some view it as a mere pastime, while others see it as a side hustle. A closer look at the profiles of leading writers, such as Tim Denning, reveals that they have been active on the platform for months or even years, consistently publishing new pieces each week. This is the approach I strive to emulate, as it lays the groundwork for financial success and recognition over time.
Commit to Medium for at least a year. Whether you're aiming for a couple of top publications or mostly self-publishing, expecting immediate results is unrealistic. I didn't break into the $100-a-month club for several months, which left me feeling disheartened. However, everything changed when Medium awarded me the top writer tag and recognized me as one of the top 1000 freelance writers. I learned that consistency and patience are key on this platform.
Initially, prioritize quality over financial gain. While the desire to earn is understandable, focusing on creating high-quality and plentiful content is more important at first. I firmly believe that writers who consistently produce a high volume of work on Medium tend to earn more than those who publish infrequently. Therefore, it's essential to regularly create content while maintaining its quality. You may not see significant financial returns until you've published a substantial number of articles.
Write when inspired, not just when you have free time. There will be moments when you feel drained yet have time to write, which often leads to subpar content. Conversely, when you’re short on time but feeling motivated, you can produce quality work quickly. I’ve always chosen to write when I feel energetic and focused, rather than forcing it when I'm tired but have the time.
Do you believe Medium is a long-term endeavor? Is it feasible for all writers to achieve financial success here?
